Nexus W2V, LLC is advancing plans to develop a state-of-the-art biochar production facility at the North Branch Industrial Park in Allegany County, Maryland. The project is designed to provide a sustainable solution to the state’s growing sewage sludge disposal challenges by converting nutrient-rich biosolids into biochar, a carbon-dense soil amendment that improves soil health and water retention.
Across Maryland and the broader Mid-Atlantic region, municipalities are facing increasing costs and regulatory pressures related to sewage sludge disposal. The presence of contaminants such as PFAS, pharmaceutical residues, and microplastics has made traditional land application and landfill disposal more complex and expensive. In some cases, waste must be transported out of state for proper handling, adding significant logistical and financial burdens.
The Allegany County facility will utilize an advanced, multi-stage thermal process to safely transform sewage sludge into biochar. The process includes drying, controlled heating in an oxygen-limited environment, and additional thermal treatment to reduce moisture and address contaminants. The resulting biochar will be blended with wood-based biochar and compost before being distributed for agricultural use, supporting soil health and carbon sequestration efforts.
Allegany County was selected for its industrial infrastructure, access to feedstock resources, and strong support for circular economy initiatives. The project aligns with the region’s economic development goals and commitment to sustainable industry.
In addition to addressing a critical waste management issue, the facility is expected to generate local employment opportunities and serve as a model for similar waste-to-value projects in other communities.
