Maryland’s Climate Solutions Now Act Accelerating Carbon Reduction Infrastructure

Statewide emissions mandates driving investment in low-carbon waste and bioenergy solutions.

Maryland’s Climate Solutions Now Act of 2022 establishes one of the most ambitious climate frameworks in the country, requiring a 60% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions below 2006 levels by 2031 and mandating net-zero emissions statewide by 2045. The law strengthens Maryland’s commitment to reducing methane emissions, expanding clean energy deployment, and advancing long-term carbon management strategies across sectors. In Cumberland, Nexus W2V’s anaerobic digester and biochar facility directly supports these goals by accepting biosolids from the city’s wastewater treatment plant and converting them into biochar — a stable, carbon-rich material that permanently sequesters carbon while improving soil health for agricultural use. By diverting organic residuals from traditional disposal pathways and locking carbon into long-term storage, the project reduces lifecycle emissions and contributes to Maryland’s broader decarbonization objectives, positioning Western Maryland as part of the state’s climate-forward infrastructure transition.
